Team Profiles

Kevin Mooney – Assistant Trainer
A top class jump jockey, Kevin retired from race riding in 1991 and in June of that year he took on the role of Assistant Trainer. Under Kevin’s care 30 Group 1 races have been won, and 125 Group races won, plus numerous big handicap winners. He is responsible for the day to day running of the yard and is the main communication link between Charlie and the rest of the staff.

Matt Stanley – Assistant Trainer
One of the best riders in the yard, Matt rode as a conditional jockey and also in Arab races where he won a Group 1 at The Curragh in 2014. He is in his 3rd season with us, and along with Head Girl Nicola his main role in the winter is breaking in the yearlings. His favourite in the yard at the moment is Parys Mountain.

Steph Potter – Racing Secretary
Steph has worked for the Hills family for nine years. She is unflappable and a huge help to Charlie when co-ordinating day to day proceedings. Muhaarar’s wins have been a major highlight for Steph. Outside the office she has two ex-racehorses, which keep her very busy.

Accounts & Admin

Debbie Rees-Jones – Racing Secretary
Debbie is one of the originals, having worked for the Hills family for twenty two years. Following the birth of her son Ben in 2009, Debbie now works part-time in the office. There have been many highlights over the years, but the one that Debbie says really stands out was when Haafhd won the 2,000 Guineas. His lad Snowy Outen (who is sadly no longer with us) felt unwell and wasn’t going to go, however after much persuasion he went and the rest as they say is history.

Harriet Broomfield – Assistant Racing Secretary
A qualified equine veterinary nurse, Harriet has been working for Charlie for over three years now. Like Steph, Harriet is very calm ‘under fire’ and helps keep the office running smoothly. Harriet rides out every day and her current favourite, and regular mount, is Mustallib.

Myra Baker – Book Keeper
Myra has been the Book Keeper at Faringdon Place Stables for 16 years. Known as ‘cash in the attic’, she works upstairs alongside accountant James.

Pupils & Head Lads

Ollie Sangster – Pupil Assistant

Ollie joined us as the beginning of the season, and it continues the link between the Sangster and Hills family forged by Robert and Barry in the 1970’s. Ollie was Champion Amateur jockey in 2013, and prior to joining us worked at Lindsay Park Racing in Australia and for Watership Down Stud in this country.

Molly Nash-Steer – Pupil Assistant

Molly also joined us at the beginning of the season and like Ollie has held an Amateur licence. Before joining the team at Faringdon Place Molly worked for the Hannon family.

Geoff Snook – Travelling Head Lad
Geoff was originally an apprentice to Barry and has worked for the family for forty six years. He looked after Rheingold and his all-time favourite horse to travel was Further Flight. He is a very familiar face on racecourses worldwide and has to be one of the best travelling head lads about.

John Burrows – Travelling Head Lad
John has worked for Barry and latterly Charlie for twenty eight years. Until recently John’s highlight during this time, was travelling Red Clubs when he won the Haydock Sprint Cup (John’s favourite track) – although that may have changed having travelled Muhaarar to win at Ascot.
